National Apprenticeship Week 2017: Meet Charlotte

It’s Day 2 of National Apprenticeship Week, and in line with this year’s theme “Ladder of opportunity”, we caught up with Charlotte Rees, a Bid Manager at NG Bailey, to hear about the opportunities which have opened up as a result of her completing a Bid & Proposal Apprenticeship.

Charlotte joined the apprenticeship in 2013, completing a Level 4 Diploma and NVQ in Business and Professional Administration.  The apprenticeship included on the job training within NG Bailey’s IT Services business and also incorporated the APMP Foundation Level certification.  On completion of her apprenticeship Charlotte moved into a permanent role as Bid and Proposal Coordinator, and has recently been promoted to Bid Manager where she has responsibility for managing and coordinating high profile tender responses on behalf of the business.

Below Charlotte shares her experiences of how and why she made the decision to undertake an apprenticeship and the career opportunities that have opened up as a result of this route into employment:

“When I was coming to the end of sixth form, I considered applying for university and decided that it wasn’t for me. I wanted to start working and gaining real life practical experience, however I didn’t want to stop learning; so I decided that an apprenticeship would be the ideal opportunity! When I found the apprenticeship online, I vaguely knew about what bidding was and how governments created tenders that companies would then bid for. The diploma however, was the main thing that attracted me to this specific apprenticeship. A level 4 diploma, along with real work life experience was perfect. The APMP qualification was then an extra qualification which although I knew little about, encouraged me to apply.

The apprenticeship has given me insight into the bid and proposals profession which has many career pathways that I hadn’t previously heard about. With different routes to take and the possibilities that are now open to me, my career aspirations have expanded. I think that the bid and proposal community that the apprenticeship introduced me to is great and really helped to widen my view on bidding, and the engineering and IT industry as a whole. I am keen to work within bidding for a while and I hope to continue to gain further APMP qualifications, and to help the bid and proposal community to grow!”

When asked what Charlotte would say to someone considering an apprenticeship in Bid and Proposals, she said:

“If you are looking to gain skills, qualifications and experience within a fast-paced industry that is continuing to grow, and you are ready to put in the work… then the apprenticeship is for you!”

Congratulations Charlotte!
